Some patients may experience short term side effects which are common and easily corrected. Each person has individual experiences ranging from no side effects to various symptoms. They may include excessive salivary flow, dry mouth, joint pain, tooth pain, muscle pain, loosening of teeth, dislodged dental restoration, and changes in bite.

American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine guidelines call for monthly follow up examinations after initial application of an oral appliance, followed by rechecks every six months for two years and annual evaluations for as long as the patient wears an oral appliance.
